Prescription Series (Businessman)
Each sculpture has an empty drawer that can be pulled open among the six representative figures of workers, farmers, merchants, scholars, soldiers, and officials portrayed by Wang Xinggang. Prescription is used to treat illnesses and save lives. The drawers in the sculpture are reminiscent of a neatly arranged herbal medicine cabinet. Wang has embedded the drawers in different parts of the human body. These solid and empty sculptures intrigue us to consider the visible and the hidden, the virtual and the real. Wang Xinggang uses pearwood and Alec again to emphasize the opposition between the virtual and the real. The old material and the new material, the opaque and the translucent, the opaque solid pearwood with the 'empty' drawer embedded in it, and the translucent 'solid' Aric are seamlessly dovetailed, again presenting the virtual and the real.
