In this series of works by Song Yuhui, he uses the form of picture-in-picture to explore the virtual and actual effects in the paintings, and therefore the impact of the painting on the viewer's world. In this work, you can see that he combines classic images from Chinese and Western cultures, such as the Cupid, and this couple in the Song Dynasty. The Song dynasty couple seems to be bordering between the real and the surreal realm inside the painting.
Whenever the viewers try to analyse the layers of the space depicted by Song, they are going to be trapped inside it, as if they are able to talk to the characters in the painting. This effect stems from his distinct sense of space and dramatic effects.
This work belongs to a series of surrealist works that Song tried to create in the recent years. He uses realistic techniques to deal with it, but it is wild and unconstrained. The ancient and modern Chinese artistic elements are combined with foreign elements in a clever composition, and they are very interesting with delicate details.
