BaDa Shanren was a descendant of the Ming dynasty clan. During his lifetime, Zhu Da used many courtesy names, the most familiar of which is "Bada Shanren. Scholars speculate that because these four characters, when written vertically together, resemble both the character for "laughing" and the character for "crying," he chose this symbol as a metaphor for his confusion and feelings of grief for the fate of his country and home. Like other literary figures under totalitarian rule, Bada Shanren had to be careful with his words and actions; his love of metaphors also made his works difficult to interpret. Shen Jingdong must have empathized with him to create such a work.
